Interim HR Director cover.
Available when you need it most.
Your HR Director has resigned. They're on extended leave. The role has evolved beyond the person in it. Or you've never had a senior HR leader and you've just reached the point where you need one.
Whatever the situation, you need someone who can step in quickly, get up to speed fast, and provide genuine senior HR leadership while you work out the right long-term answer. That's what interim HR looks like. Based in Apex, I provide interim HR Director cover for businesses across North Carolina and beyond.
The situations that call for interim cover.
- Your HR Director has left unexpectedlyResignations rarely come at a good time. If your HR function has lost its senior leader, the people issues don't pause while you recruit. Interim cover keeps things moving and protects the business while you find the right permanent hire.
- Extended leave or absenceMaternity leave, long-term sickness, or a planned sabbatical — whatever the reason, a capable interim keeps your HR function running without asking your leadership team to absorb work they're not equipped for.
- A gap between permanent hiresSometimes the recruitment process takes longer than expected, or the role needs to be redesigned before you hire into it. An interim holds the space and can help you define what the permanent role should look like.
- A specific transition or change programmeRestructuring, acquisition, rapid growth, or a culture shift — some periods of change need more senior HR capacity than usual, on a time-limited basis. Interim is the right model for that.
- You've never had a senior HR leader beforeIf you're bringing in senior HR thinking for the first time, interim can be a lower-risk way to start — you get to see what good looks like before committing to a permanent hire.
What the first few weeks look like.
The full scope of what I take on.
An interim HR Director engagement isn't a limited-scope project — it's genuine senior HR leadership on a time-limited basis. That means:
- Attending leadership team and board meetings as the HR lead
- Managing employee relations issues — grievances, disciplinaries, investigations
- Overseeing compliance across employment law and HR policy
- Leading or supporting restructuring and redundancy processes
- Managing and developing any existing HR team members
- Recruitment and onboarding of senior hires where needed
- Advising on compensation, benefits, and total reward
- Building or updating HR infrastructure — policies, processes, documentation
- Preparing for and supporting the transition to a permanent hire
Interim vs fractional: Interim means I step in full-time or near full-time to cover a specific gap or lead a transition. Fractional means I work with you part-time on an ongoing basis alongside other clients. Both are available — the right model depends on what you need and how urgently you need it.
Based in Apex. Available across North Carolina and beyond.
I'm based in Apex, NC and work with businesses across the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle. For interim engagements, on-site presence is available where it adds value — and most of the time a blend of on-site and remote is the most effective approach.
I also take interim engagements with businesses elsewhere in the US and internationally. If the situation calls for it, we'll work out what presence makes sense.
Availability varies — the best way to find out if I'm available for your timeline is a quick conversation.

How quickly can you start?
Usually within a week or two of agreeing scope — sometimes faster for urgent situations. The first step is a discovery call to understand what's happened, what you need, and whether I'm the right fit. That conversation is free, takes 30 minutes, and gives you a clear picture of what interim support would look like for your business.
